4 Winter Pool Maintenance Tips

4 Winter Pool Maintenance Tips

Your pool is a sign of fun and the good times of summer. You take care of it all summer long so that you and all your friends can enjoy it while it’s still warm. But just because it’s closed for winter doesn’t mean that your pool care responsibilities stop when the fun does. Here are a few maintenance tips to use during the winter. When using Sweeney’s Pool Service Inc. you can rest assured that a licensed professional will be servicing your pool.
Check All Parts of Your System
Before you start the process of closing up for the winter, make sure you thoroughly check the entire system. Drain all the water from the pump, filter, and pool heater, and then drain the water until it’s about 5-6 inches below the pool skimmer. Taking out all the water will help reduce the risk of freezing and bursting pipes.
Keep the Pool Cover Clean
Letting debris and water accumulate over the course of the winter and do some serious damage to the cover itself. If water starts to collect, take a shop vac and suck up the water that’s sitting in certain spots. Not only will it keep your pool clean for when you’re ready to open it back up, but it can also help keep animals and other wildlife out of it.
Add Chlorine
As your closing up your pool for the winter, add some chlorine to the pool to ensure a cleaner spring opening. Avoid adding too much, however, because an excessive amount can lead to a bleached liner. Once you’re ready to open your pool in spring, start by opening one corner of the pool and adding more chlorine to get the system going. If you’re unsure of how much chlorine to add at either of these times, you can hire a professional that will educate you on how much to add and when to add it.
Try Enzyme Chemicals
No matter how hard you try, it’s likely that some type of debris will find it’s way into your pool during the winter. To help break these non-living organic intruders, try using an enzyme chemical to help break them down. Some of these contaminants include leaves, bird droppings, or pollen.
